Jr. Instructor Highlight: Ms. Elena Guo

Meet Ms. Elena Guo – Brown Belt

Elena has been training in the martial arts for 4 years, joining SMA in April 2016. Elena completed the SMA Junior Instructor Training Program in September 2018.  She believes the mental aspects of Tae Kwon Do are the most valuable lessons. These lessons have taught her discipline, perseverance, self-control and respect.  She understands that to succeed you must break through the mental barriers and never give up.

We asked Ms. Elena a few questions, here’s what she had to say:

What is your most memorable/proud moment?

My most memorable moment in martial arts was after completing my brown belt test, Master Morris said that he and the Black Belt Board collectively agreed that my belt test performance was the strongest performance of the day and that he was incredibly proud of me.  The brown belt test was by far the hardest belt test I had done, and after having endured almost 4 hours of pushing myself to my physical limits, it was extremely rewarding to hear that praise.

What is your teaching philosophy?
My teaching philosophy is to ensure that students are having fun while learning. I am happy if there is just one thing that they can take away from each class, no matter how big or small that thing is.

Why do you love the martial arts?
I love martial arts because it is not a sport that only purely trains your physical body, but it is a sport that trains your mind too. Martial arts teaches you practical skills such as self defense, but more importantly, it teaches you respect, discipline, and perseverance.
While the physical skills are not something that I can use every day in my life, the 5 Tenets of Taekwondo are aspects that I apply in my daily life, helping me become a better person.

Why do you love SMA?
I love Summit Martial Arts because we get to know one another and eventually, we grow to become a family together. Everyone supports and helps each other to improve and become the best version of themselves.

Hobbies outside of martial arts?

My hobbies outside of martial arts include badminton, piano, and choir. I have completed level 10 Royal Conservatory of Music piano, and I am a part of the Festival Choir at school.

Elena believes that words and actions reflect who you are.  Showing respect to others is also showing respect to yourself.  Elena enjoys instructing because it allows her to pass on knowledge and experience to younger students. She believes if you can help one person improve it makes a difference in their lives. She looks forward to expanding her knowledge and skills through her martial arts journey.

Find a Training Partner and CRUSHING your goals!

Training for the long haul can be a daunting task.  Students can often lose motivation and drive somewhere along the road to black belt.  What makes the journey special is finding out what you’re made of during these rough patches in the road.  One thing that can help you stay motivated and on the path is having an accountability or training partner.  The potential benefits to this relationship are too strong to ignore.

Check out what makes this relationship so amazing, how it can impact your training and what things you should look for in a potential training partner.

Here are the top reasons a training partner/accountability buddy is beneficial.

1) They can help you achieve your fitness/martial arts goals – having a partner with similar goals can help elevate your training to the next level, it increases motivation, helps with keeping intensity level high, keeps you accountable, and increases your commitment level

2) Help with form – having a partner there with you during training sessions can help ensure you are keeping proper form and training safely.

3) Safety first – with a training partner, you can feel safe and secure knowing you will have someone there if you need help.

4) You can try new things- bounce ideas off each other – keep things fresh. Having a partner can prevent workout boredom and keeps your training from getting in a rut.  It also keeps the FUN in your workouts outside of the dojang.

5) Helps with accountability – knowing you have someone waiting for you keeps you on track and disciplined.  

6) Helps eliminate distraction – The perfect partners will keep each other from getting distracted during workouts.

7) Having a partner – either in person, by text, or online – can be hugely beneficial for motivation. Stanford University found that simply receiving check-in phone calls/texts from a partner increased the amount participants exercised by 78% (even after 18 months).

The Perfect Training Partner Checklist/importance

✔ Challenges you during your workouts and vice versa – having someone there to push you for that one last push up, or to keep sparring when you want to give up – keeps you kickin’ butt!

Choose someone with similar goals – if your goal is to get to black belt, then find a partner who is interested in the same.  Partnering with someone who is training for physical fitness isn’t the greatest fit if you are looking to do the long road to black belt.

Choose someone with a like-minded attitude – positive energy is infectious!

Motivation – the perfect partner is there to lift you up when you feel down and help keep you going when you want to throw in the towel.

Helpful – look for a partner who is helpful and not overly critical.  You want to walk away from your workouts feeling pumped, not defeated!

 Accountable – make sure you choose someone you can count on, a partner who is on time and shows up every single training session.

Similar Schedules – this one is crucial – finding a person who is able to work within your work/family/life schedule takes the stress out of planning and can get you on a consistent training schedule.

Healthy Competition – a little friendly competition never hurt anyone!  Keeps you moving forward!

Whether you are working on your home training or in the gym, having a training partner can make all the difference.  Keeping you motivated, keeping you accountable, keeping things fun and challenging you to push yourself to the next level.    Talk to your fellow students, see if any one is up for the challenge.  You won’t regret it!

Farewell Mr. Chernichen & Goodbye Summer!

As many of you know, Mr. Chernichen will be taking on a new job in a new city at the end of August.  Join us in wishing him all the best in his new adventure.  Mr. Chernichen has been a dedicated, loyal and influential member of the SMA Team since DAY 1.  He was there for every class when we started out at the Sheppard Community Centre in 2014 and took on a greater teaching role when we moved in to our new 40th Street home in 2015.  We certainly would not be where we are if it was not for his tireless efforts and dedication to the school.  We would like to take a look back at all the memories Mr. Chernichen has created here at Summit Martial Arts.  Mr. Chernichen – we thank you!  You will be missed!

In other SMA News:

Summer went by in a flash!  Usually summers are pretty quiet around SMA but not this year.  We were impressed by the tremendous dedication and hard work all our student put in over the summer.  With our upcoming belt test on September 16, students are pushing themselves to get ready.  Only a few short weeks to go, keep up the hard work!

Our 3rd Annual Beach BBQ was held in August – despite a cool morning, the sun came out and we were able to enjoy the day.   Students and their families came out to enjoy some good food, great company and fun in the sun!  Despite the cooler morning temperatures, some of the kids jumped right in the water showcasing their TKD kicks!  Way to go guys!  Thank you to all the families that came out.  Can’t wait until next year.

What does being a Black Belt mean to you?

A Black Belt isn’t just a rank or a belt it is yourself, your life. A person with a Black Belt should bring good to our world. We all got our white belt, orange belt, yellow belt, so on so forth to reach a new beginning. The tenets of Taekwondo: Courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control and indomitable spirit are not only what a person with a black belt holds but also what a true martial artist holds. Master Morris has told us many things but the one thing that I can’t forget is that “A BLACK BELT IS A WHITE BELT WHO NEVER GAVE UP”. Discipline is also a big part of having a black belt because without discipline you will not be able to control yourself, you will just do whatever with the title of a person with a black belt. When Master Morris asked me what a black belt means to me and what I will do to give back to the community… I had to think… a lot.

A black belt is my family. Although my mom Ydelle isn’t in the community of Taekwondo, she has been so supportive to us. Even from the beginning, at the age of 7 and 6 when my mom enrolled us to do weekly lessons at the clubhouse in our community. My mom did this because we were hyper… all the time and she wanted our energy to be drained so that we could sleep early. When Aidan came to visit from Toronto, my mom enrolled him as well so that the three of us can bond because we didn’t know each other at that time. When the program ended, the instructor wanted to build his own school, and that is when we started to go up the ranks and do tournaments. 4 years later, the school that we were in got hit with trouble. My dad told us that we were gonna move schools so that we could continue our journey.

A black belt is also persevering.  Persevering is a big part of preparing and doing the test. I have to persevere because I just can’t keep up with my brother and my cousin so I have to persevere in my training, not just for my black belt but also reaching this point. So to me, a Black belt is my family and perseverance.

What I will do to give back to the community is teach( if I passed the Junior Instructor Training Program (JIT)), assist and help the students. I will do this because I feel joy when I help people. When I taught my first class I felt happy because I am teaching the students what I learn and when I see them smile it makes me happy. I will also do this because my parents would be happy to see me teach or just lead a warm-up or help a student with something they are struggling on. When I see my parents smile when I assist, lead a warm-up or teach makes me happy.

In conclusion, I would like to thank Master Morris, Kyo Sa Nim Chernichen and my dad Kyo Sa Nim Bernardo for allowing me to test for my black belt and helping me along the way. I would also like to thank Mrs. Morris for everything she has done to arrange this test. I would also like to thank my mom Ydelle for starting my journey and watching me grow in this community. Last but not the least I would like to thank Kwan Jang Clark the rest of the board for flying out here to evaluate the three of us. Thank you so much for allowing us to test for our black belt!

We close our 2016 season with a bang!

There is always something happening at Summit Martial Arts, from belt tests to tournaments to SMA celebrations.  Let’s take a look at November and December around the school.

Our November Belt Tests gave our students an opportunity to showcase their skills.  There is a lot of hard work and dedication that goes in to preparing for the test.  At home practice is a must as you advance through the ranks at SMA.  Our Warriors and Adults tested on Saturday, November 19.  As you advance, the tests become increasingly difficult.  Not only does it test your skills but also your mental fortitude.  Congratulations Vench, Mrs, Chernichen, Spencer, Xander, Mr. Cutlan and Mr. Morin. Be proud.  Our tests are not easy, you earned those belts.

Our Little Monkeys and Little Dragons Belt Tests are just as difficult.  A student must be deemed ready to test.  Readiness is not simply for showing up to class regularly, it must be earned.  Students must show a mastery of skills and display an attitude becoming of a young martial artist.  Listening, courtesy and respect are just as important as the physical skills.

Congratulations to all our Little Monkeys who were promoted in November and December!  You did a great job, we are proud of you.  Look at those smiles!!

And congratulations George, Tyler, Christian and Evan!  Excellent display of all your hard work.  Check out those forms!

We also had another Pop Up Boutique from KSL Actionwear in November.  Thanks Jessica for showcasing 100% Canadian designed and made athletic fashions.  We love having you visit!  Don’t forget to check out their website.   We love supporting Canadian business owners.

On November 27, we attended the Kicks Open Martial Arts Tournament in Calgary, Alberta. Team Summit had a great showing!   We came home with 5 Golds, 4 Silver and 2 Bronze! Our students commented on the pride they felt for representing Team SMA, having fun and doing their best, despite the fact that there were no awards or trophies. We’d say that speaks volumes about the character of our students!  They represented Summit with the utmost sportsmanlike conduct, we are very proud of each and every one of you. Thank you to parents for sending photos while we were busy judging and keeping score.

FINALLY, our 3rd Annual Christmas Party was held on Saturday, December 17.  What a great turnout!  The school was filled with students and their families. Thank you to all the families for coming out and bringing such amazing dishes for our pot luck.  Congratulations to all those students who received awards this year.  We presented awards for Most Improved, the Mrs. Morris Award, the 5 Tenants Award, Most Dedicated to name a few.  We watch all year long to see who has demonstrated both physical improvement and an attitude that truly embodies what SMA stands for.  We hope you all had fun and can’t wait to do it again next year!  If you missed the party, you can still check out our Year in Review on Youtube.

Our next tournament is on Saturday, February 4.  Let’s make 2017 something to remember!

A little spring in our step for April

A little late but here’s what happened in April.

We started the month off a bang!  On Saturday, April 2 we had our monthly belt grading.  We started the day with our Advanced ranks – green belt and red with a black stripe.  A lot of hard work goes in to preparing for our tests.  Today, our students demonstrated their tenacity and indomitable spirit pushing themselves till the very end.  Congratulations Coban, Chaney, Mikko and Aidan on your promotions.  You EARNED those belts!

Next up was the Beginner ranks – orange and yellow belts.  Belt Tests can sometimes be an eye opening experience.  We pride ourselves on maintaining a high standard at all our belt tests.  It is not enough to simply show up – you must demonstrate your techniques correctly to be promoted.  This is where all the at home practice becomes evident.  Congratulations Tynan, Shawna, Carson, Spencer, Taydon, Isabelle, Ethan and Angelo.  Well done!

Our Little Monkeys and Little Dragons closed out the day.  These kids did an amazing job showcasing their skills and physical endurance.  We are proud of each and every one of you.  Congratulations Cayden, Tyler, Evan, Nicolas, Rylan, Zurrin, Aiden, and Ignacio on your belt promotions!

Cardio Kick Start kicked off on Saturday, April 9 and what a kick off it was!  Cardio is a huge component to successful sparring.  We’ve had a great turn out and it’s only getting better.  This may become a permanent class on the SMA schedule.

On Saturday, April 23, Team Summit attended the Calgary City Championship hosted by Provincial Martial Arts.  We had 7 students compete in divisions ages 6 through to adult.  Team Summit came home with 7 Golds, 2 Silver, and 3 Bronze!  A special congratulations to Max who earned a spot on Team Canada for the W.O.M.A.A World Martial Arts Games in Germany in July!!  We are so proud of each and every one of you.  You represented SMA with the utmost sportsmanlike conduct, we could not ask for any thing more.   Great job!

Congratulations to our own Mr. Chernichen for finishing the Calgary Police 5k on April 24 in 25:29! Great job!  It’s not all about TKD, all the time.  Way to get out there and support Calgary Police Services.

The price you pay for sports…..

This post was taken from a fitness group we belong to.   This is such an excellent commentary on the impact sports can have on our young people.  We had to share.  Here’s what was said:

One of my friends asked “Why do you pay so much money for your kids to do all their sports?” Well, I have a confession to make. I don’t pay for my kids to to do sports – I invest in their future to become good solid well rounded adults.

So, if I am not paying for sports what am I paying for?

– I pay for those moments when my kids become so tired they want to quit but don’t.

– I pay for those days when my kids come home from school and are “too tired” to go to their practices, but they go anyway.

– I pay for my kids to learn to be disciplined, focused and dedicated.

– I pay for my kids to learn to take care of their body and equipment.

– I pay for my kids to learn to work with others and to be good team mates, gracious in defeat and humble in success.

– I pay for my kids to learn to deal with disappointment, when they don’t get that placing or title they’d hoped for, but still they go back week after week giving it their best shot.

– I pay for my kids to learn to make and accomplish goals.

– I pay for my kids to respect, not only themselves, but other players,officials, and coaches.

– I pay for my kids to learn that it takes hours and hours, years and years of hard work and practice to create a champion and that success does not happen overnight.

– I pay for my kids to be proud of small achievements, and to work towards long term goals.

– I pay for the opportunity my kids have and will have to make life-long friendships, create lifelong memories, to be as proud of their achievements as I am.

– I pay so that my kids can be out on the mats, that sheet of ice, ball park field, and soccer field instead of in front of a screen…

…I could go on but, to be short, I don’t pay for sports; I pay for the opportunities that sports provides my kids to develop attributes that will serve them well throughout their lives and give them the opportunity to bless the lives of others. From what I have seen so far I think it is a great investment!

…. An investment in “their” future to become fantastic adults later!!!!

This is what you invest in every time you set foot on the mats, on the field, on the rink, get in the pool or put your feet on the pavement for a run.

Happy Anniversary SMA! Our month……

March was a prep month here at SMA.  We were getting set for our next belt test, getting ready for summer camps, cardio kick start, our KSL Pop Up Boutique and are gearing up for our next tournament on Saturday, April 23.

Our Summer Camp registration opened to SMA students and the public.  We are offering 2 – 1 week full/half day session in July and August.  If you are interested in joining us, please register online or in person.  There are limited spaces available for each week.  Don’t miss out!

On March 18 and 19, Mrs. Morris attended a training camp at Phase 1 Sports in Las Vegas, Nevada to learn some new conditioning techniques.  The training was intense!  After the 2 day training camp, she has come back with new strategies for training , fueling our bodies and new exercises to help us work on our cardio and functional strength.  It was a great weekend – she can’t wait to share all she learned!

One of our BIG milestones was celebrating our 1 year Anniversary at the 40th Street location.  This year has flown by!  We would like to thank all our students and their families for making SMA what it is.  We could not have done this without all your love and support.  Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

On Saturday, April 2, we had our monthly Belt Test.  We started the day with Red with Black Band and Green Belts.  What a show of strength and determination!  Our Red Belts started the morning off with 300 push ups and 300 crunches – what a great way to shake off the nerves and get that blood flowing.  Congratulations to Aidan, Mikko, Chaney and Coban on their promotions!  You deserve those belts.

Next up, we had our Orange and Yellow Belts.  We have always maintained that our tests are not easy.  That statement was put to the test for orange and yellow belts.  Our students learned that at home practice is a crucial component to ensuring you pass your test. We would like to congratulate Ty, Shawna, Carson, Taydon, Angelo, Evan, Spencer, and Isabelle on their belt test promotions!  Great job – you should be proud of your accomplishment.

Our last test of the day was the Little Dragons and Little Monkeys.  These kids did an amazing job showcasing their skills.  You all showed your determination and listening skills – we are proud of each and every one of you. Congratulations to Nico, Tyler, Ethan, Rylan, Zurrin, Ignacio, Cayden, and Aiden on their belt promotions.

What’s up next for SMA?

Our Cardio Kick start class starts next Saturday, April 9 at 8:30am.  Please see Mrs. Morris to register.  This class is open to SMA students, their families and the public.  It is a 45 minute high intensity cardio class.  Can’t wait to start this fun!

Our next tournament is on Saturday, April 23 for the Calgary City Championships.  It is at the Marlborough Community Centre – 6021 Madigan Drive NE.  Tournament training starts on Saturday, April 9.  Please talk to Master Morris if you are interested in competing.

Our next belt test is Saturday, April 30 – belt test readiness assessments will take place the week and a half prior to the test.  Please ensure you are getting to all your classes and practicing at home to ensure you are ready.

Time for a Cardio Blast – Register NOW!

We received numerous requests from students about running a cardio only class.  You talked, we listened!  SMA is offering a Cardio Kick Start class starting Saturday, April 9 at 8:30am.  The class will run for 4 weeks – excluding Saturday, April 23 (for the tournament). This class will be a 45 minute non -stop, cardio blast!  The 4 classes will alternate between a cardio kickboxing style and circuit training.  Fun for everyone!!

This class will be open to everyone.  No experience required.  No uniform needed.  Participants can wear regular workout clothing.  Bag gloves will be required.

For our current students, this class is an excellent addition to your current training.  Looking to work on that cardio for the next belt test, this is the way to do it.  As you all know, our tests are not easy.   They challenge the mind and the body.  The best way to prepare yourself is with high intensity interval training.  This will give you the most realistic mirror of an actual SMA belt test.

Summer Camp Registration is OPEN!

Summit Martial Arts is proud to offer full day and half day – week long summer camps for ages 6-12. Our camps are open to everyone. There is no experience necessary. Full day students will have 2 – 1 hour lessons per day. Our days feature a balanced mix of tae kwon do fundamentals, sparring (light contract/flag sparring), self-defence, kicking exercises, punching drills, and board breaking. Students will work on strength training, agility and co-ordination through a series of fun and challenging circuits. Children will be divided in to smaller groups of 4-5 based on their age and skill level and will be paired with a junior camp instructors. There will also be a mini-tournament held on Friday where students will showcase all their newly developed skills.

Our goal is to provide a high energy, active and fun day for our kids. This is a great opportunity for kids to learn a new skill, make new friends, and boost their self-confidence when faced with challenging situations.

During our craft/activity periods, students will learn about the history of martial arts and the 5 tenants of Tae Kwon Do. Our crafts will center on the martial arts – drawings, paper creations, and belt designs.

Each day has a structured schedule from 9am to 4pm. Parent drop off is at 8:30-9:00am, pick up is between 4:00-4:30pm. Half Day morning is 8:30 am – 1:00 pm and afternoon is 1:00pm – 4:30pm.

Our lunch is at 12noon – students must provide their own lunches, snacks and beverages. A Pizza Lunch will be held on Friday.

Week 1: July 18-22

Week 2: August 8-12

Space is limited to 15 students per week. Summit Martial Arts reserves the right to cancel camps due to low registration. Minimum number of students per week is 10. Parents must have all registration documents and payment submitted 1 week prior to the 1st day of camp. Please see our cancellation policy for full details.
