We had a busy May & June, time for summer fun!

Here’s what we’ve been up to in May and June:

Happy 2nd Year Anniversary to Summit Martial Arts!  We held our very 1st class on May 13 at the Sheppard Community Centre.  That seems like a million years ago.  We have come so far and are grateful for all the love and support our SMA families have shown us.  Here’s to the next 10 years!

On May 14, we had another wonderful visit from the KSL Mobile Boutique – we love to support Canadian business owners and their products.  It was a great day, we can’t wait until our next Pop Up Boutique in the fall.

On May 30, we had a Little Monkeys Belt Test.  Our Monkeys did their best and earned their next belt.  Congratulations to David, Leila, Xander, Ignacio and Calin.  Great work!

The 38th Annual Western Canadian Karate Championships were held on May 21 in Red Deer, AB.  It was a big turn out – several hundred competitors – and some stiff competition.  Team Summit showcased their skills and represented SMA with the utmost integrity and sportsmanship.  Team Summit came away with 4 Gold medal wins, 7 Silver medals and 4 Bronze medals. We are proud of each of you!

In June, we had a 3 week Bo Staff Workshop.  Our students learned the basics of Bo Staff, worked on these techniques to prepare for their 1st Bo Staff form.  This was an exciting class for all.

On June 14, CTV Calgary was at the dojang to film our very own Max. S. for CTV Athlete of the Week.  We are so proud of Max!  He will be heading to the World Martial Arts Games in Germany in July to compete for Team Canada.  We would like to send a special thank you out to @BigChiefBeef and CTV’s Lisa Bowes for supporting amateur athletes on their journey to the World stage. Max’s story airs Friday, July 1 at 6:45pm.  Be sure to tune in!

On June 18, we headed out to Beiseker for the East End Tae Kwon Do Kids 4 Kids Tournament.  Team Summit came home with 3 golds, 1 silver, 1 bronze and 2 4th place!!  Congratulations Max, Chaney, Cole and Brody!

Our final test of the season was on June 25.  It was a BIG one!  Our students work very hard to prepare for their tests.  As a student moves up in the ranks, there are months of practice to get ready.  We uphold a rigorous test standard for ALL our students.  Anyone that receives a promotion at SMA knows that they have earned that belt.  Congratulations to Brody, Shelley, Jann, Jeannie, Cole, Ethan, Matias, Jason, and Elena!

Later in the day, we had our Little Dragons and Little Monkeys test.  Our kids did an amazing job showcasing their skills.  Great job everyone!  Congratulations to Nicolas, Tyler, Evan T., Jorden, Sebastian, Xander, and Evan D.

Summer is here!  Remember students may wear their SMA T-shirts to class for July and August.  We are looking forward to an awesome summer – let’s work hard and get ready for next season!  We wish Max the best of luck as he steps on to the world stage in a few short weeks……….stay tuned for updates!

A little spring in our step for April

A little late but here’s what happened in April.

We started the month off a bang!  On Saturday, April 2 we had our monthly belt grading.  We started the day with our Advanced ranks – green belt and red with a black stripe.  A lot of hard work goes in to preparing for our tests.  Today, our students demonstrated their tenacity and indomitable spirit pushing themselves till the very end.  Congratulations Coban, Chaney, Mikko and Aidan on your promotions.  You EARNED those belts!

Next up was the Beginner ranks – orange and yellow belts.  Belt Tests can sometimes be an eye opening experience.  We pride ourselves on maintaining a high standard at all our belt tests.  It is not enough to simply show up – you must demonstrate your techniques correctly to be promoted.  This is where all the at home practice becomes evident.  Congratulations Tynan, Shawna, Carson, Spencer, Taydon, Isabelle, Ethan and Angelo.  Well done!

Our Little Monkeys and Little Dragons closed out the day.  These kids did an amazing job showcasing their skills and physical endurance.  We are proud of each and every one of you.  Congratulations Cayden, Tyler, Evan, Nicolas, Rylan, Zurrin, Aiden, and Ignacio on your belt promotions!

Cardio Kick Start kicked off on Saturday, April 9 and what a kick off it was!  Cardio is a huge component to successful sparring.  We’ve had a great turn out and it’s only getting better.  This may become a permanent class on the SMA schedule.

On Saturday, April 23, Team Summit attended the Calgary City Championship hosted by Provincial Martial Arts.  We had 7 students compete in divisions ages 6 through to adult.  Team Summit came home with 7 Golds, 2 Silver, and 3 Bronze!  A special congratulations to Max who earned a spot on Team Canada for the W.O.M.A.A World Martial Arts Games in Germany in July!!  We are so proud of each and every one of you.  You represented SMA with the utmost sportsmanlike conduct, we could not ask for any thing more.   Great job!

Congratulations to our own Mr. Chernichen for finishing the Calgary Police 5k on April 24 in 25:29! Great job!  It’s not all about TKD, all the time.  Way to get out there and support Calgary Police Services.

Happy Anniversary SMA! Our month……

March was a prep month here at SMA.  We were getting set for our next belt test, getting ready for summer camps, cardio kick start, our KSL Pop Up Boutique and are gearing up for our next tournament on Saturday, April 23.

Our Summer Camp registration opened to SMA students and the public.  We are offering 2 – 1 week full/half day session in July and August.  If you are interested in joining us, please register online or in person.  There are limited spaces available for each week.  Don’t miss out!

On March 18 and 19, Mrs. Morris attended a training camp at Phase 1 Sports in Las Vegas, Nevada to learn some new conditioning techniques.  The training was intense!  After the 2 day training camp, she has come back with new strategies for training , fueling our bodies and new exercises to help us work on our cardio and functional strength.  It was a great weekend – she can’t wait to share all she learned!

One of our BIG milestones was celebrating our 1 year Anniversary at the 40th Street location.  This year has flown by!  We would like to thank all our students and their families for making SMA what it is.  We could not have done this without all your love and support.  Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

On Saturday, April 2, we had our monthly Belt Test.  We started the day with Red with Black Band and Green Belts.  What a show of strength and determination!  Our Red Belts started the morning off with 300 push ups and 300 crunches – what a great way to shake off the nerves and get that blood flowing.  Congratulations to Aidan, Mikko, Chaney and Coban on their promotions!  You deserve those belts.

Next up, we had our Orange and Yellow Belts.  We have always maintained that our tests are not easy.  That statement was put to the test for orange and yellow belts.  Our students learned that at home practice is a crucial component to ensuring you pass your test. We would like to congratulate Ty, Shawna, Carson, Taydon, Angelo, Evan, Spencer, and Isabelle on their belt test promotions!  Great job – you should be proud of your accomplishment.

Our last test of the day was the Little Dragons and Little Monkeys.  These kids did an amazing job showcasing their skills.  You all showed your determination and listening skills – we are proud of each and every one of you. Congratulations to Nico, Tyler, Ethan, Rylan, Zurrin, Ignacio, Cayden, and Aiden on their belt promotions.

What’s up next for SMA?

Our Cardio Kick start class starts next Saturday, April 9 at 8:30am.  Please see Mrs. Morris to register.  This class is open to SMA students, their families and the public.  It is a 45 minute high intensity cardio class.  Can’t wait to start this fun!

Our next tournament is on Saturday, April 23 for the Calgary City Championships.  It is at the Marlborough Community Centre – 6021 Madigan Drive NE.  Tournament training starts on Saturday, April 9.  Please talk to Master Morris if you are interested in competing.

Our next belt test is Saturday, April 30 – belt test readiness assessments will take place the week and a half prior to the test.  Please ensure you are getting to all your classes and practicing at home to ensure you are ready.

Summer Camp Registration is OPEN!

Summit Martial Arts is proud to offer full day and half day – week long summer camps for ages 6-12. Our camps are open to everyone. There is no experience necessary. Full day students will have 2 – 1 hour lessons per day. Our days feature a balanced mix of tae kwon do fundamentals, sparring (light contract/flag sparring), self-defence, kicking exercises, punching drills, and board breaking. Students will work on strength training, agility and co-ordination through a series of fun and challenging circuits. Children will be divided in to smaller groups of 4-5 based on their age and skill level and will be paired with a junior camp instructors. There will also be a mini-tournament held on Friday where students will showcase all their newly developed skills.

Our goal is to provide a high energy, active and fun day for our kids. This is a great opportunity for kids to learn a new skill, make new friends, and boost their self-confidence when faced with challenging situations.

During our craft/activity periods, students will learn about the history of martial arts and the 5 tenants of Tae Kwon Do. Our crafts will center on the martial arts – drawings, paper creations, and belt designs.

Each day has a structured schedule from 9am to 4pm. Parent drop off is at 8:30-9:00am, pick up is between 4:00-4:30pm. Half Day morning is 8:30 am – 1:00 pm and afternoon is 1:00pm – 4:30pm.

Our lunch is at 12noon – students must provide their own lunches, snacks and beverages. A Pizza Lunch will be held on Friday.

Space is limited to 15 students per week. Summit Martial Arts reserves the right to cancel camps due to low registration. Minimum number of students per week is 10. January starts with a bang!

January has flown by!  We had a lot going on from tournament training, belt tests, 30 Day Challenge and our regular training.

Tournament Training was in full swing every Saturday in January.  We are gearing up for tournament season with lots of practice, sharpening our forms and working on our sparring techniques.  We have a large number of students competing at the upcoming tournament in Calgary.  Competing students ages range from 6 to 48!  Go Team Summit!  The Rocky Mountain City Championships was held on Saturday, February 6 (more details to follow in February’s updates).

30 Day Challenge started on January 18 and we hit the ground running!  SMA friends and family joined in our special challenge – 30 days of healthy eating, challenging workouts and accountability.  We shared our experiences and challenges in our private Facebook page.  It was a lot of fun!  Can’t wait to do it again.  Does any one else love/hate the leg workouts?  Thanks to all our participants!

The importance of goal setting – what are YOUR goals for 2015?

You don’t need to wait for January 1 to set goals for yourself.  Goal setting is about finding what’s important to you and figuring out a way to attain those goals.  It is crucial that your goals are something YOU want to do, not just something that sounds good to others.  The process of goal setting helps you understand where you are and where you want to go – it also helps keep you motivated.  Here are some tips for setting goals for yourself:

1) Choose a goal or 2.  Be specific. For example, “lose weight” or “get my black belt” are too vague.  You want to be crystal clear in your intention – “lose 25 lbs” or “get my black belt by XXXX year”.  Try to find a middle ground between aiming too high and underestimating your abilities. It is important to understand why you are doing what you are doing.  What will accomplishing this goal mean to you?

2) Write your goals down.  Be as specific as possible, include a timeline for achieving your goals.  Be realistic – getting your black belt in a year is not an attainable goal. Write your goals in a positive tone – positive thinking goes a long way in helping you achieve the goals.  Keep a journal of your progress.

3) Make your goals measurable.  For example, if you goal is to lose 25 lbs, you want to set a specific measure to lose 1 lb per week.  Tracking your progress in these little increments provides you with small victories.  These positive steps build momentum, boost your confidence and help you to keep motivated and on target to reach your goal.

4) Create an action plan – make it happen.  This is vital to achieving your goals.  “Failing to plan is planning to fail”.  Decide when you are going to put your plan in to action, include details and timing of your plan, make milestones to help you achieve the goal on time.

5) Review your goals often.  Go back to your journal, make sure that this goal is really what you want to do.  Recognize and celebrate your success.  Adapt your plan if necessary, just make sure to keep to your main objective.

6) Stick to the plan, but stay flexible.  This will be the biggest challenge.  Life sometimes throws you in a direction you were not expecting.  This is where you will see how much your goal means to you – if it is important, you will find a way to make it work despite the change in circumstance.  Don’t let distractions lead you down the road to procrastination.  Go back, read why you are doing this, keep motivated!

7) Share your goals and find an accountability friend.  Be brave, share your goals with a friend, family member, or instructor.  As you go through the process, ask for feedback and reward yourself for milestones in your journey.  For example, if you achieve the next belt on your way to black belt – reward yourself with a special dinner or a new uniform/bo staff/punch mitts.  Having someone to help you stay accountable for your goals is priceless!

The bottom line is goal setting has powerful and lasting effects on your life and your well being.  The power is in your hands – the sky is the limit!  You can accomplish anything you put your mind to!!  Be BOLD!  Be AMAZING!!

How to prepare for your next belt test

Belt tests at Summit Martial Arts are an honoured right of passage.  Our belt tests are NOT easy.  It is not enough to simply show up, you must EARN your belt.  We adhere to a generations old, rigorous standard for our belt promotions. Students are expected to show physical endurance, technical skills and mental fortitude.  Here are a few tips to help you prepare for your next belt test:

1) Make sure you have your written belt test curriculum.  If you do not have one, please ask Master or Mrs. Morris for the appropriate belt level sheet. These forms are for you to keep, you can check off all the items as you master them.

2) Practice at home!  Practicing at home can make a big difference in the mastery of your forms, hand techniques, kicks and 1 step sparring.

3) Work on your physical endurance at home.  An easy way to ensure you are ready for the push up and sit up requirement is to practice in smaller chunks.  If you are watching television, do sets of push ups/sit ups during the commercials.  As you all know, the requirement gets bigger and bigger for every belt level.  How many is for black belt again?  🙂

4) Talk with Master Morris about areas that need improvement.  Master Morris is always available before/after class to discuss your progress and what you need to work on.

5) Work toward earning ALL 4 of your skill stripes.  We have no set day/time for a skill stripe test.  If you feel you are ready, ask Master Morris to look at your forms before/after class.

6) Make sure to attend EVERY practice.  The easiest way to ensure your progression through the ranks is to come to class regularly.  It is that simple. The more you come to class, the more you learn, the more you get to practice.

7) Be sure to have a positive mental attitude.  Attitude can determine success or failure.  If you believe in yourself, you are capable of doing anything you set your mind to.  The power is in YOUR hands. Black Belt

3) Teaches Self Defence – Self Defence is the corner stone for most martial arts programs.  Martial Arts teaches children how to handle many of life’s challenges – both physical and emotional.   Being able to deal with life’s disappointments and let downs is just as important a self defence skill as learning how to punch and kick. We teach kids the skills to avoid dangerous situations and how to defend themselves against a bully or attacker should that situation arise.  Children will learn “street smarts” and know how to apply effective techniques when necessary.  Knowing these skills gives kids the confidence to react when the time is right.  These skills could save their life.

5) Develops Social Skills – Being part of a team or part of a group class, children learn important social skills as they interact with other children and their instructor. Our children show their support of their fellow students by cheering each other on at belt tests, tournaments and during class.  Being surrounded by positive influences will have a tremendous effect on your child’s well being and these early experiences will have a lasting impact on the lives.

How to choose the BEST Martial Arts School for YOU!

How do you choose?  Tae Kwon Do, Karate, Hapkido, Jui Jitsu……it can all be a little overwhelming.  There is certainly no lack of martial arts schools out there.  If you are in a big city, there is literally one on every corner.  However, not all martial arts schools are created equal.  It is important to do your research before committing to any school.  You’ll be happy you did.  This is especially true when children are involved.  Choosing the wrong school can turn the child off the sport forever.  With that said, there are many reputable schools out there that practice what they preach and have an excellent program in place.  Here are a few tips when looking for a martial arts school.

1) Decide what you would like to gain from learning martial arts.  Are you to improve your physical fitness?  To learn Self Defence?  Would ySummit Martial Arts Sparringou like to compete in Tournaments? Are you interested in the philosophy/character building part of martial arts?  Or go the long haul and get your black belt? These are all important considerations when deciding on a school. Writing down your goals can help you tremendously when searching for the right school.  When you call/email for information, have these ideas in mind and ask questions.  It is important to know this up front before committing.

2) Shop Around.  Look at a number of different schools in your area, if possible.  If the school offers a free trial class, Interest and Committmentgo check it out.  Was it fun and enjoyable for you? Also, check out reviews online.  What are people saying about the school?  Do they participate in social media – check out their pages.  The school that most closely aligns with your goals and values is your best bet.

3)  Find a qualified instructor.  Take the time to read about this person’s credentials.  Ask questions:  how long have they been teaching?  How long have they trained in the martial arts?  How often does the head instructor teach? Just because the head instructor is an accomplished martial artist themselves, it does not mean they are a good teacher.  A great instructor takes time to explain why and how the techniques they are teaching are important.  Moreover, how those techniques can be applied in real life situations.   One key point is to make sure the instructors correct improper technique.  This is especially true in the case of children.  If you are going to pay for someone to teach you, make sure they teach you right the first time.  Sometimes paying a little more or driving 5 minutes longer are worth it.  You come away being a better and more well rounded martial artist.  Quality instruction is worth it.

4)  Goal Setting.  A good instructor invests in YOU and is interested in YOUR goals.
Watch a class, is the instructor motivating?  Or preaching? Sit down, talk about your goals, ask questions.  Find out if they have a written curriculum. You deserve the best instruction available.

5)  Some final things to consider:  take a look at class size – is the class size capped? what is the student to teacher ratio?  Do they use student assistants?  Do they have age appropriate classes?  Take a look at the students in the class.  Are there a number of intermediate and high ranking belts?  This may indicate that the school motivates students to stay. If the students are all beginners, that may say something too. Or are there an unusually high number of black belts?  This could speak volumes about the program.

These are some general tips on how to choose the BEST school for you and your family.  The RIGHT school is out there – do your research, be diligent, don’t be afraid to ask questions.  It’s your money.  It’s your time and effort.  You deserve to get the most out of your martial arts education.  It’s a great sport for the entire family.
