Jr. Instructor Highlight: Mr. Brody Morris

Meet Bo Kyo Sa Brody Morris

Red Belt

Brody began his martial arts journey at the age of 5.  His early experiences took place in the basement of his home under the instruction of Master Morris.  If you didn’t know, Brody is the son of Mrs and Master Morris and brother to Riley.

Before the opening of SMA, Brody achieved his yellow belt in ITF Tae Kwon Do.  Brody has been training at SMA since it’s inception in May 2014.  He has competed in numerous local and provincial tournaments, taking home Gold in Forms, Sparring and Bo Staff.  Brody’s proudest moment was at the 2019 Western Provincial Open in Edmonton when he qualified for the World Karate Commission Provincial in Sparring.

Brody enjoys assisting in our youngest children’s classes.  He is dedicated to giving back to the martial arts as it has taught him many lessons that he applies to his daily life.  Brody has set a goal for himself and hopes to test for his red with black band belt this coming September.

Most recently, Brody attended the 2019 MVA Martial Arts Camp in Halifax, NS to hone his skills and learn from top instructors in our organization.

In his spare time, Brody enjoys biking, hiking, camping and walking his dog Maui.

Brody has been a tremendous help in the children’s classes over the years.  He assists in Little Monkeys and Little Dragons classes.  We thank him for all his hard work and dedication to the school.

December in a Nutshell

December has been a crazy month.  We’ve had the KSL Fashion Event, wrapped up the Purse Project, we’ve welcomed some new students, had an all day belt test marathon and our awesome Christmas Party!  Who’s ready for a break?

On Saturday, December 5, we hosted our 2nd KSL Actionwear Fashion Event.  We love supporting other Canadian business owners.  And, what a great turnout for our Pop Up Fashion event.  Who exactly is behind KSL? Former Canadian Championship cyclist, Katy St. Laurent designs comfortable, convertible clothes for sport, travel and every day life.  All clothes are designed and made in Canada!!!  We love our KSL!  Don’t worry if you missed it, we will be hosting another fashion event in the Spring.  See Mrs. M if you would like to order something in the meantime.  Thank you to Jessica for bringing KSL to us!

The Purse Project wrapped up on December 6, SMA collected two huge boxes filled with toiletries and purses.  We were happy to be part of this awesome initiative lead by Smarty Skirts.  Don’t forget to check out their Facebook page to see what else they have to offer.  We look forward to helping with this project again next year.

We had our last belt test of 2015 on Saturday, December 19.  We started the morning with a Little Monkeys, Little Dragons, and Warriors belt test.  The kids did an amazing job showcasing their skills to the judges panel. Congratulations to Xander, Tyler, Spencer, Isabelle and Jeanne!  All your hard work and practise paid off, you EARNED those belts!

Our Advanced rank belt test started later in the afternoon.  As many of you know, our belt tests are not easy.  It is not enough to simply show up, you have to put in the work. We follow a generations old, rigorous standard of belt promotion criteria.  If you receive a belt from SMA, you can rest assured you have EARNED it!  This test was no different – our students showed all heart in their 3 hour test.  Congratulations to Josh, Shane, Mikko, Aidan and Marcuz on their promotions.  We are proud of each and every one of you.

Later that night, we had our annual Christmas Party.  There were 85 SMA family members in attendance – what a great turnout! There was food for miles!!  Thank you to all the families for coming out and bringing such yummy treats and dishes!

Our award ceremony had a few new categories this year.  We presented our Most Improved New Students to Dan, Xander, Mia and Rylan.  Our Most Improved Overall went to Florian, Jann, Nicolas and Hunter.  This year we awarded Most Improved Sparring to Angelo, Most Improved Hand Techniques to Olivia, Most Improved Kicks to Coban and Most Improved Forms to Brody.  The Most Dedicated Student award went to Lee and Aidan.  And, the final award Best Sportsmanship went to Marcuz.  Congratulations to all of you!

The evening ended with a video montage of our year in review.  What a year it was!  We want to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season.  We can’t wait to get back to the dojang and start training for the World Martial Arts Games trials.  Let’s make 2016 another year to remember!

A Black Belt Test at Summit Martial Arts

Summit Martial Arts SignOn Saturday, September 19, 2015 Summit Martial Arts held our 1st Black Belt Test in Calgary.  This is a sacred rite of passage only a select few will accomplish.  We adhere to a generations old, rigorous standard for our black belt promotion. As with all our belt tests, a student must EARN the belt around their waist.  It is not enough to simply show up – a student must show their skill, physical endurance, dedication, determination and their indomitable spirit.    Within our organization, Martial Virtue Alliance, all students undergo the same demanding black belt test.  When you wear a Black Belt from our organization, you can rest assured you deserve your rank.

Belts at Summit Martial Arts

Our distinguished Board consisted of 7 Black Belts from Maine, Nova Scotia and Calgary – Grand Master Michael Clark, Master Shane Morris, Master Wayne LangilleKyo Sa Nim Beckey Langille, Kyo Sa Nim Drucie JanesKyo Sa Nim Garnet McLean, and Mr. David Uy.

Black Belt Test at Summit Martial Arts

This day has been a year in the making.  A Black Belt Test requires a tremendous amount of work and dedication on the part of the student and their instructor.  Our Black Belt test challenges every part of the body and the mind.  We spend a lot of time discussing and working on a positive mental attitude.  After all, the mind will quit a thousand times before the body will break.  Fatigue can play games with your mind. It is only those with an indomitable spirit that push through that barrier and persevere to reach the summit.

Push Ups Black Belt Test

The physical requirements for the test are intense.  We begin with push ups and sit ups.  This extreme physical exertion at the beginning of the test resets the mind and pushes nervous energy aside.

Kick at Black Belt Test

Our students are tested on their knowledge of hand techniques, kicks, 1 step sparring, take downs, forms, board breaking, and sparring.

1 Step Sparring

The Black Belt test runs for about 4 hours.  The final portion of the test is 10 – 2 minute rounds of sparring with a fresh black belt.  This is no easy feat.  After 3 1/2 hours of pushing their bodies to the limits, the sparring is where you really see what your made of.

Sparring at SMA

Sparring at SMA

A tremendous amount of drive, determination and personal fortitude is required to push through 10 consecutive rounds of sparring.  Both these gentlemen gave it everything they had.  They embody what it means to be a TRUE martial artist.

At the end of the test, the Board meets to discuss the outcome.  It was the unanimous decision of that Board to promote both students.  On this day, Mr. William Chernichen was promoted to 2nd Dan and Mr. Florian Bernardo was promoted to 1st Dan.

Stand Before the Board

One of the members of our Board commented “This is a True BLACK BELT test. Mr Bernardo and Mr Chernichen truly deserves their rank. Very Honored be be part of it. My utmost respect to Master Shane Morris and thank you for bringing the true Martial Arts back.”

Black Belts

It was an amazing day.  Congratulations to both our students on their promotions.  All your hard work and dedication paid off.  Remember:  A Black Belt is a white belt that never gave up.  So very true.
